Ideas from Oromocto

BBT 9
Not semestered, as students come in 3 groups per year.
All students have netbooks, so they all follow along with the same assignments together.

Orientation (10 classes)
  • Using email
  • MS Word - postcard about student & partner
  • Research Assignment with 5 Topics to choose: Cyberbullying, Netiquite, Cell phone ettiquite, ... (and including proper citing of sources)

Advanced MS Word
  • Higher expectations

Photoediting (from BBT site, with changes)
  • Each student edits a photo of themselves
  • Each student repairs an old photo (rather than making a photo look old)

Career Cruising
  • (site/activity could use an upgrade)
  • (see FHS notes for more on Career Cruising)

Google Sketchup
  • Enjoy the 3D design
  • Draw a chair.  (Plain chair = plain mark)

BBT 10
Documents must be saved with a keyword in the name, so that the teacher can search the student drives to find the assignment file.

BBT CAD Cabin
  • Uses lots of photos from an actual cabin so that the students get a good understanding of what is expected and how to visualize to get a correct drawing.

Career Study & Internet Research
  • How to search with Google
  • Google's History
  • Automotive Tech
  • { Specific elements of technology }

Powerpoint
  • Interactive Powerpoint games (for K-12) with site that has a large database of past projects.
  • Students must create a Powerpoint game.  (Provides students with an excellent detailed list of measurable expectations for their assignment.)

Internet Archive (Wayback Machine)
  • Helping students to understand that everything on the Internet can be found, so be careful with your "digital dirt"!

Individual Modules
  • Provide a powerpoint to students so that they can choose from a list, including Advanced Powerpoint, Digital Photography, MS Publisher, ...

Ideas from Leo Hayes

Uses daily journals to write what students have learned each day.
Course outline at beginning of semester has a tear-off section at the bottom that must be signed.  This section states that the progress reports will be coming home at least monthly. (Only chase students once.)
This year, there's no final exam in BBT 9.

BBT 9
Web link to course materials
Students may have netbooks, but most work is done on the in-classroom desktop computers.

Career Cruising
  • May need to start fresh with students, as they may have lost their middle school logins.
  • Research top 3 careers & present this to the class.  (6-7 slides, with specific topics per slide.  See FHS wiki.  Students must be told to take this seriously.  Strange careers may be chosen, but the presentation to the class helps all students learn about what careers are out there.)
Have saved resume & cover letter for PDCP.

PowerPoint
  • Martin has re-worked the BBT activity videos (from the BBT site) with the latest version, so that the videos contain the same toolbars/ribbons.

Other Modules that all staff use (see link above)

End-of-Semester Summative Assessment
  • No exam, so students spend the last 2 weeks creating a large project to showcase all their work.  See "Final Project".

BBT 10
Web link to course materials
  • Beware that screen shots from Photoshop and MS Publisher don't reflect the latest software versions/toolbars.
  • MS Publisher - Create a business and make business cards and other documents.

Ideas from FHS

Administration encourages interim reports (before mid-term, after mid-term).  Teachers often provide cumulative reports at the end of each module (so 6-7 reports per semester).
Have final exams in BBT 9 (sometimes 100 multiple choice questions on QuizStar, and sometimes 25 multiple choice with computer activities [e.g. Illustrator, Powerpoint).

BBT 9
Web link to course materials
Uses a web-based calendar (Google) to show modules.  Students have one week after the marking deadline, and then the mark is a zero (except in extenuating circumstances).
Any makeup tests (called "Post-Test") is done before the marking deadline.

See Mr. Haney's web page for a full list of activities and below is a zip file with necessary files shared over the school network.

Notes from after the meetings...

As a result of our conversations, I'm going to post some of the files I've used in the past.  These won't be great teaching tools, but might be helpful if you want to see what's been done so you can see what a software tool does.

GIMP as a Photoshop option

Picture
I (Graham) taught my GIMP unit for my grade 8 students as a simple digital manipulation exercise.  I only have one video and it was made for a supply day (and so has lots of extra stuff at the beginning).

Attached are the files I've used in the past.  Feel free to edit or just use as ideas.
