GIMP Activity 3

Picture
In this activity, we will be taking a good photo and making it look old.  

In the demonstrations, we will start with the same original photo so that the effects we are making are obvious.

However, when you make your own photo edit, you will apply the effects to the same photo so that all the effects will work together.

  • Open "Changing of the Guard2.jpg"

  • Colors -> Hue/Lightness/Saturation
    - Hue (swapping/turning the color wheel)
      Set Hue = -10 to -30
    - Lightness (lighten/darken colours [hues])
      Set Lightness = -10 to -30
    - Saturation (enrich/dull colours)
      Set Saturation = -30 to -70



Remember these Keyboard Shortcuts:
  • Ctrl-Z  = "Undo"
  • Ctrl-Y  = "Redo what you just Undid"

  • "+"     = Zoom In
  • "-"      = Zoom Out

  • Colors -> Brightness/Contrast
    - Brightness (add white/black)
      Set Brightness = -20 to -40
    - Contrast (Brights brighter/darks darker)
      Set Contrast = -10 to -30

  • Dodge/Burn tool
    - Dodge one or two corners (to lighten)
    - Burn coffee cup pattern (to darken)
    Use different brushes to make interesting

  • Blur Filter
    - Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur
      (between 1 and 2)

  • Noise Filter
    - Filter -> Noise -> HSV Noise 
      (Set "Holdness" = 1 or 2
       Just for show, try adjusting
       Hue, Saturation and Value very high.
       See the result, but don't leave it there.

    - Should set as follows:
       Holdness = 1 to 2
       Hue = 0 to 40
       Saturation = 0 to 40
       Value = 0 to 40

  • Scratches with the Eraser tool
    - Change the brush and set very small

  • Ripped Edges with the Eraser tool
    - Start large, so don't have 'dangling' pieces
    - Finish with small brush so not a clean cut

  • Selective Filters with the Lasso tool
    - Select an area with the Lasso (trees between guards)
    - Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur

  • Remember to Select -> None 

  • Otherwise, you'll try to do something and it won't work.  
    No, the GIMP isn't broken, you just have a selection still active!

  • Save as activity-3.xcf
    - Be sure to upload this as a "File" on your Weebly site

  • Export as PNG - activity-3.png
    - PNG & GIF image files keep transparency
          but JPG won't!!!
    - Instead, JPG converts transparency to
          white!!!

    - Be sure to upload this as a "Picture" on your Weebly site ... and select the first black button that says "Open larger image ..."
