Digital Safety & Citizenship

This unit is based on the resources available at BBTNB.ca.  (OVERVIEW Page (Digital Security))

Security

Read this page: "Digital Security"

Then read this CBC Article about the worst passwords found in a hacking/leak of passwords.

Then answer these questions:
  1. Give 3 examples of bad passwords.
  2. Give one bad password that you have used in the past (and don't use anymore).
(Make one up if you have to.)
  3. Who is most likely to use a bad password?  Explain why.  (Choose only one group.  Some groups to consider: seniors, teenagers, supervisors, employers, workers, students, newbies, gamers, ...)
  4. How long do you think a password should be to be safe?

    -------
Next go to the Digital Security page and be sure you understand Hercules Code and "
    TMLLo$343vaKid$".
Next, click to go to the Microsoft Safety & Security Centre and try some different passwords
  5. Create a password that is "Weak".   (Be sure to record it as your answer for this question.)
  6. Create a password that is "Medium" (and record it).
  7. Create a password that is "Strong" or "Best" (and record it).
  8. Create a password that you thought would be "Strong" but it only showed up as "Medium".  (Record it.)
  9. Based on your experiments with this password tool, what do you think are the rules for a "Strong" or "Best" password?
  10. List 2 people you know that use a weak password.  (Maybe you should talk to them?)

    -------
    App Security
  11. What kind of danger can Apps cause?  (Think of either a phone app, Facebook app or similar.)

    Read this article:
Facebook info sharing created Zoosk.com dating profile for married woman
    (or PDF available here)
  12. What did this woman do wrong?
  13. What did the App company do wrong?
  14. What could she do once her information was posted online?
  15. Did the company apologize?

    --------
    Email Security
  16. What is "phishing"?
  17. Find an example of phishing.  (Copy-and-paste it as your answer for this question)
  18. What is so dangerous about phishing?

    ---------
    Posting Online
  19. What do you think of Yik Yak?  (Read this CBC article.)
