Digital Literacy - The 8 Elements
Do a web search to find the 8 Elements of Digital Literacy. (If no good links, then check this slideshow on slides 28-38.)
- List and explain the 8 elements of digital literacy. (Be sure to credit the authors.)
- Rank the 8 elements (using their "C" name only). Then explain why you ranked your top 2 and bottom 2.
- Make up your own list 5-10 specific ways that 15-year-olds should be digitally literate. (The items in your list should be linked to one or more of the 8 elements.)
Trying Something Different - LibreOffice
Go to the Apps page of PortableApps.com and find "LibreOffice". ("Libre" means both 'open' and 'free' in French.)
Here's the direct link to the LibreOffice Download page, if you need it.
(This is a BIG download and will take a while to install. While waiting, why not jump down to the section below called, "What Should a High School Student Learn?")

- With LibreOffice, try using the Word Processor. Type in some text. Drag in a photo.
Does it work like Microsoft Word? If the printer is working, print the test page that you have made.
(Save your ".odt" sample file and upload it to your Weebly page.) - With LibreOffice, try using Calc (the spreadsheet). Type some text into some different cells.
Does it work like Microsoft Excel?
(Save your ".ods" sample file and upload it to your Weebly page.) - With LibreOffice, try using Impress (for presentations). Type some text in and create slides. Try different designs.
Does it work like Microsoft PowerPoint?
(Save your ".odp" sample file and upload it to your Weebly page.) - Go to libreoffice.org. How much does LibreOffice cost?
- Go to Staples or FutureShop and look up "Microsoft Office".
How much is the cheapest version?
How much is the most costly version?
(Be sure you are buying software and not a text book! Also, don't be tricked into buying just one piece of software like MS Excel, MS Project or MS Visio. This question asks for the whole "Microsoft Office".) - Write 3-5 sentences about what have you learned about LibreOffice and Microsoft Office?
(Your answer could include: Which one do you prefer and why? Which one was easier to use?) - There are schools in Australia where students must learn 2 ways to do anything digital.
For instance, they can't use just Windows, Mac or Linux, but must use at least 2.
And they can't use just Microsoft Windows or Apple Pages or LibreOffice / OpenOffice.org, but must use at least 2.
And the same thing with editing photos or making a web site or ... well, anything digital!
When looking at the topic of "Digital Literacy", do you think this Australian strategy is a good one, or not? Explain.
(5 sentences maximum)

Feel free to give specific versions and models, as Wii and WiiU are different!
- Which of these platforms did you prefer? Why?
- How often do you play digital games against people in the same room as you?
- How often do you play digital games against people NOT in the same room as you (so, online or networked)?
